“We had a lot of fun in the activities you assigned to us!  Personally, it was a great experience to work together with that amazing group.”

-ILCWR Volunteer, May 2011

Volunteering with ILCWR is a great way to learn and develop new skills, meet great people and help out in your community!

The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region places tremendous value on our volunteers, whether they are serving on our Board of Directors, assisting with administrative tasks around the office, helping out at our special events or puppeteering with the Kids on the Block program!

Check out the listings below for our current volunteer opportunities, or visit www.volunteerkw.ca for listings from ILCWR and other community organizations!

Volunteer Board Members (Board of Directors)

Are you interested in bettering the lives of people with disabilities in Waterloo Region?  We’d love to have you on BOARD!  The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region (ILCWR) is looking for visionary, forward-thinking members of the community to fill three vacant seats on its Board of Directors for the 2011-2012 term.

Ideally, applicants will have a background in law, finance, policy or administration, but our real interest is in people who support the vision, mission and values of our organization.  ILCWR is a non-profit service provider that helps people with disabilities achieve independence in our community through self-direction and choice.  The Board of Directors helps to guide the organization to these ends through policy governance, philosophical decision-making and strategic planning.

To apply, contact Andrew Posen, Executive Assistant by phone at (519)571-6788, ext. 7425, or e-mail at andrew@ilcwr.org to obtain an application form.  Special consideration will be given to applicants with disabilities.

Special Events Volunteers (Access 2012)

We are looking for Volunteers for the Access 2012 tradeshow, which will be held on September 21 and 22, 2012 in the Kiwanis Arena at the Kitchener Auditorium. This two-day event will showcase the best in accessible products and services for people with disabilities, and planning is already underway!

We will need volunteers for a variety of roles and times throughout both days--Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22.  If you would like to help make this event a success, please join us on either or both days!

If you are interested in providing your assistance, please contact Lorene Collingwood at 519-571-6788, ext 7479 or lorene@ilcwr.org and let her know when you are available!

Volunteer Puppeteers (Kids on the Block)

The Kids on the Block program have been providing fun and educational puppet shows to children since 1983.  Volunteers are trained to use a variety of puppets with and without disabilities to perform scripted shows for children. Volunteers will learn the different scripts and understand the issues present for disabled populations. Volunteers must have physical stamina to operate the puppets, public speaking/acting skills, solid English communication skills and ability to work closely with others. Volunteering as a puppeteer is an excellent opportunity for those interested in counseling and therapy, teaching, theatre and the special needs population.

To apply, contact Angelika Werner, Kids on the Block Coordinator at angelika@ilcwr.org.

"You Can Quote Me On That"

Going home with the support was the best choice I could have made. I’m getting stronger all the time! Thanks ILC.
