IL Canada is a non-profit, National organization run by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. 

We operate on the philosophy of the Independent Living Movement which affirms the right of persons with disabilities to control their own lives and live independently. 25 Independent Living centres deliver services that contribute to the empowerment of individuals. These services include Information and Networking, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Development, and Research & Community Development.  


Purpose of Position

The National Manager is the Board of Directors’ authorized representative for all aspects of the organization’s operations.

General Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the National Manager is to achieve the objectives set out by the IL Canada Board of Directors. The responsibilities may change from time-to-time. However, the following will serve as a summary of expected duties:

·        Provide leadership in extending the IL Canada strategy and Mission while creating new opportunities.

·        Ensure the continued development, implementation and execution of a national revenue development strategic plan.

·        Implement the communication plan ensuring clear and consistent communication with member agencies.

The National Manager provides advice to the Board on strategic and policy issues, acts as a spokesperson to all internal and external stakeholders to promote the organization, its programs and most of all the Independent Living Philosophy.

Demonstrable Qualifications:


·   Fluent in both English and French

·   Graduate degree in a relevant field or the demonstration of equivalent skills and abilities, plus relevant professional development in leadership and management

·   5 years senior management level experience with well developed judgment and leadership skills in a team environment.

·   Successful track record in fundraising, financial and budgetary management, marketing, technology and public relations

·   Significant experience with not-for-profit organizations, including direct involvement with boards, funders (both government and public), and partners.

·   Experience and knowledge of disability issues

·   Leadership ability with multiple stakeholders and demonstrated ability to foster positive, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, sponsors, volunteers and staff and with various parts of a multi-level organization

·   Strategic planning ability

·   Excellent oral and written communications skills

·   Effective public speaking and group facilitation skills

·   Strong interpersonal and conflict management skills

·   Proficiency in MS Office and use of the internet, and various databases.
