Words of Thanks

My name is Cathy. I am a 48 year old woman.

I spent the better part of 2015 in various hospitals, due to a number of physical ailments.  In January 2016,  I moved to a Long Term Care facility, after my doctors at the hospital informed me that I would not be able to function independently.  I soon found a Long Term Care facility stripped me of my dignity and self-worth. I was surrounded by older people with severe cognitive disabilities. I was subjected to physical and verbal abuse by other patients.  My personal choices were restricted (i.e. meals and showers).

My emotional health took a huge decline. I was terrified that this would be the rest of my life. My lowest point was believing that people came there to die.  The staff, to the best of their ability, helped me, helped me as much as possible, given that they were regularly understaffed.

In March, 2016, I was fortunate enough to be offered an apartment at 50 Moorgate Crescent, as part of the Independent Living Program. T his move has made a dramatic improvement in bith my physical and mental health.  Few people would be able to comprehend the restoration of my self-worth, dignity and independence, achieved by transferring from Long Term Care to Independent Living.

Since arriving at 50 Moorgate Crescent, I have had immense support from all of the staff.  They help ,e with daily tasks, such as cooking, showering, and personal grooming. They also help with my laundry.  They monitor me day and night to ensure I am safe.  My admission to hospital have also been greatly reduced and are remarkably shorter. I feel that the hospital admissions are shorter in duration due to the immense support I receive at home.  I feel that the staff treat me with the utmost respect.  They go above and beyond on many occasions all in the name of giving me a better life.  I am thrilled that I am able to make the most basic decisions (i.e. what to eat and when to shower).

I cannot express properly the gratitude I feel to all of the Independent Living Staff.  They have mastered the balance of supporting me, with my daily tasks, while at the same time enabling me to be independent.

The ILC lives up to its name. Thank You!
