These days, amazing advances are being made in the the field of rehabilitation for people with disabilities.  This article from The Globe and Mail describes how "functional electrical stimulation" (FES) helps an individual with quadriplegia to manipulate items with his hands.

Dr. Milos Popovic and his colleagues at Toronto Rehab and the University of Toronto are at the forefront of this promising medical advancement, funded in part by the Rick Hansen Foundation.
