See how the Tournament of Hope Access Fund is impacting people in our community:

The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region works hard to remove barriers for people with disabilities in our community.  It’s one of the ways we help people with disabilities achieve independence!

In our pursuit of a barrier-free Waterloo Region, we have learned from consumers of our services that one of the biggest barriers in any community is money. That’s why the Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region offers the Tournament of Hope Access Fund, which enables consumers to apply for funding toward the purchase of assistive devices, home and vehicle modifications, and any other specialized equipment.

Previously, the "Access Fund" comprised donations from our community along with additional resources from occasional ILCWR fundraisers. Although this fund still depends on these donations, thanks to our partnership with the Tournament of Hope, this fund now receives a regular injection of money allowing us to meet the needs of more individuals.

The Tournament of Hope is an annual golf tournament that started in 1998 to raise funds for an individual to purchase a wheelchair accessible van. Since then, the Tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and helped numerous individuals in our community reach independence. A few years ago, the Tournament of Hope partnered with the Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region and is now an integral part of the service that we can provide to individuals with disabilities and their families in our community. For more information about the golf tournament please visit www.tournamentofhope.ca.

The Tournament of Hope Access Fund is available to any individual with a disability living in Waterloo Region. Individuals are encouraged to apply for alternate sources of government/community funding before making an application to this fund as resources are limited and may not be available at the time of request. In addition, any given source of funding may not be able to handle the entire request on its own, including the Tournament of Hope Access Fund. Using multiple sources of funding may help you achieve the total cost of your request.

Examples of such alternate sources of funding may include:

  • Ontario March of Dimes
  • Ontario Disability Support Program
  • Region of Waterloo
  • The Assistive Devices Program
  • Other community resources/service clubs

Request type:

The Tournament of Hope Access Fund considers applications under two levels of funding request.

Greater than $2000: Applicants may request up to $7500 towards the purchase of equipment/modifications and renovations. Applications are reviewed by the Tournament of Hope Access Fund selection committee which meets annually in November (applications for this level of funding must be submitted by November 1).

Applicants are expected to present their application for funding in person to the selection committee which is comprised of both ILCWR staff and community volunteers. Alternative arrangements will be made for those unable to present in person. Each year, the committee selects appropriate candidates for funding based on need, amount requested, and available funds. Any request between $2000 and $7500 must follow this process and successful applicants will typically receive funding close to the time of our annual Tournament of Hope Golf Classic in June.

Less than $2000: Applications for amounts equal to or less than $2000 may be considered throughout the year and granted immediately if the application meets all criteria and funds are available. Applications are reviewed by ILCWR staff and are not subject to further committee review.

Further Guidelines:

  • Funds may be used towards the purchase of assistive devices, home and vehicle modifications, and any other specialized equipment.
  • Funding is not available to lease equipment or purchase medical supplies.
  • Requests can be made for significant equipment repairs, but the fund will not cover regular wear and tear.
  • Funds will be paid directly to a certified vendor and WILL NOT be paid directly to the applicant.
  • Applicants presenting to the selection committee may do so in person, and/or along with family members or other representation.
