What is the Access Fund?

The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region works hard to remove barriers for people with disabilities in our community. The Access Fund helps individuals with disabilities, living in the Waterloo Region, purchase necessary assistive devices and medical equipment to improve their quality of life.

The largest and initial funder for the Access Fund is the Tournament of Hope Golf Classic. The Tournament of Hope is an annual golf tournament that started in 1998 to raise funds for an individual to purchase a wheelchair accessible van. Since then, the Tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and helped numerous individuals in our community reach independence. A few years ago, the Tournament of Hope partnered with the Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region and is now an integral part of the service that we can provide to individuals with disabilities and their families in our community.

Today, the Tournament of Hope and Deer Ridge Golf Cub Tournaments raise money for the Access Fund each year.  The Access Fund also receives donations from other fundraisers and donors.

What can funding be used for?

The Access Fund is primarily used to help individuals purchase assistive devices and medical equipment.  Funding may also be used towards necessary vehicle or home modifications.  In some instances, funds will be granted to assist with significant equipment repairs.  The Access Fund does not cover ‘wear and tear’ repairs or equipment leases/rentals.

Examples of eligible items include:

  • wheelchairs
  • shower chairs
  • porch lifts
  • specialized bedding
  • ramps

To apply, please read our Access Fund Eligibility Form and then complete the Access Fund Application Form. Both documents are below.
